Installation Instructions

Global West manufactures two different types of rear coilover suspension kits for 1967,1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972 Chevelle, El Camino, Monte Carlo, Gto, Lemans, Cutlass, 442, Skylark, and other A-body applications.

Both kits are used for street and racing purposes; however the major difference is where the shock mounts. The first type Global West produced uses Penske racing shocks and the shocks mount before the axle.

This particular kit, the shocks mount behind the axle. They install approximately where the factory shocks are. The advantage to running the shock in the back is mostly cost. It is easier to install and no welding is required. The main advantages to using a coilover shock-spring combination verses the stock setup are adjustable ride height and multiple spring rate availability. Both coilover kits use a 2.5 id flat ground spring which is a standard size for many coilover applications.

Installation is fairly simple. No welding is required; you have to drill a few holes during the installation process and thats it. This kit is somewhat similar to the 1964-66 rear coilover kit using viking shocks except the cross member and the upper shock brackets are different.

The Global West Advantage:

Instead of just bolting a coilover over shock and spring to the stock upper mount and moving the lower mount over for clearing the differential, Global West supplies an upper cross-member for taking the majority of the load. The cross member bolts close the factory frame rails and then picks up the original shock mount on the frame.

Note: When installing the shock to the new cross-member, an additional bracket (supplied in the kit) will bolt on the other side of the shock so that the shock attaching bolt is supported on both sides.

By doing it this way, we increase the load capability and put the bolt in double shear, which is the strongest way to attach the coilover shock. The lower shock mount is also placed in double shear. The shock mount bolts to the differential and moves the shock over away from the differential for spring clearance. To install, drilling a couple holes in the differential lower arm bracket is required.

Why use adjustable shocks:

Global West recommends double adjustable shocks because you have the ability to fine tune your ride or improve traction for performance applications. You can’t do that with a non adjustable shock or for the most part a single adjustable shock. Not everybody has the same circumstances that the non adjust shock was designed for. A single adjustable shocks can come close but somewhere along the way you will be shy with to much or to little dampening. Double adjustable shocks will get you there. Yes there are triple and quad adjustable shocks that are still better however now we are into racing.
