Sway Bars: (Front and Rear)

Sway bars should always be considered a suspension tuning devise, not the suspension. It is easy to over sway bar a Camaro or Firebird. Especially now when the concept today is bigger is always better. This statement is not true. To big of a front bar makes the car ridged and dance over bumps creating a understeering condition. Too much rear sway bar creates oversteer and reduces the amount of power being put down on the pavement during corner exit. In fact we rarely recommend a rear sway bar on these particular cars. The following chart provides available sway bar sizes, however, talking to one of our technician before ordering might be advisable. For example several variables exist regarding the rear suspension: tire size, horsepower, and rear spring rates are just some of the variables that influence whether or not to use a rear sway bar.

Rear sway bars are not required with performance rear leaf springs. Standard multi leaf cars may or may not require a rear bar depending rear tire size.

Sway bars are supplied with polyurethane end links and sway bar to frame bushings.

Rear Springs:
Category 5 rear leaf springs with spherical bearings and Del-a-lum bushings for 1967-69 Camaro and Firebirds.

Category 5 leafs springs are not something new from Global West. We have used this leaf spring package on race cars for years and now we are making them available to you.

We offer five multi-leaf spring combinations for 1970-81.

  1. Part # L-16.------ L-16 replaces the standard multi leaf and lowers the rear by 1-1/4-inches from stock. L-16 is a excellent street spring however it will not handle drag or high horsepower applications without a traction device.
  2. Part # L-2 ------ L-2  is designed for performance street and racing applications. We use this spring a lot with our performance street and race car combinations.   L-2's unique leaf arrangement control spring wrap-up which causes wheel hop. Using this type of spring combined with Del-a-lum bushings and performance shocks generally eliminates the need for traction bars. This leaf is used on 70-73 Camaro and Firebirds. L-2's also lower the vehicle 1-1/4 inches from stock.
  3. Part # L-3 ----- L-3 is designed for performance street and racing applications. L-3 has a slightly higher spring rate then an L-2. L-3's unique leaf arrangement also controls spring wrap-up which causes wheel hop. Using this type of spring combined with Del-a-lum bushings and performance shocks generally eliminates the need for traction bars. This leaf is used on 74-81 Camaro and Firebirds. L-3's also lower the vehicle 1 inch from stock.
  4. Part # L-2CAT5
  5. Part # L-3CAT5

What are Category 5 leafs? Category 5 leafs are leaf springs with spherical bearings installed in the eyelets rather then bushings. The leafs are supplied with Del-a-lum bushings for the frame, shackles, and special hardware. Why should you use them?

The biggest advantage to this type of leaf spring system is that it allows the rear end to camber during hard cornering. The bearings allow the suspension to pivot keeping more tire on the ground. At this point it becomes basic. The more tire on the ground, the more traction we are going to have. The end result is faster corner exit speeds. We have various customers indicate to us a 2 to3 second lap improvement.
Not bad for a little bolt on.
